A Newport home offers a rich history and old fashioned courtesy. The town sprang up along the Newport River as barges would stop here to unload products bound for the port at Beaufort. The town has grown to about 4500 residents. Many choose to make Newport home to take advantage of the small family friendly vibe in a town that has a short driving distance to the beach. It is only five miles to the beach in Morehead City. Many military families also choose Newport real estate since the community is only seven miles away from Havelock, which houses Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station.
There are many events and attractions available to Newport residents. The Pig Cooking celebration takes place every spring and the Newport Historical Association offers a look into the lives of soldiers during the Civil War. There are community runs, craft and painting events, and many activities available through the Newport Public Library. The Parks and Recreation department offers much to residents including waterslide events, fitness camps, movies in the park, summer camps, rock painting, events for seniors, and much more. The Newport Community Festival is always a fun time that brings the community together in early September.
Newport residents can find many shopping and dining options in town. Fat Fellas BBQ and Grille, Frank’s Pizza and Subs, Riverside Pizza and Subs, and Time Out Tavern are a few favorites. Shopping opportunities in Newport include a Walmart Neighborhood Market, Food Lion, and a variety of thrift shops, consignment shops, and boutiques. Children in town attend school in the Carteret County Public School District, or one of many private schools in the area. Families enjoy spending time at Fort Benjamin Park, Patsy Pond Nature Trail, and The Barnyard. The pleasant year round temperatures make it a joy to be outside.
